MEGATREND #2

  • If the headings below are useful please use them. If not, feel free to ignore the headings and structure I have suggested and just add your contributions underneath the tables below in any way you see fit.
  • New to wikispaces tables? Click EDIT, then just click in a table below and start typing and the table will expand as you add text.
  • Don't worry about formatting if it gets a little messy. I'm happy to fix it later. I just want your ideas! - Michael.

2. People expect to learn, work, socialise, and play whenever and wherever they want to.

Increasingly, people own more than one device, using a computer, smartphone, tablet, and e-reader. People now expect a seamless experience across all devices.

Management: Management, as the provider and allocator of resources to enable strategic objectives to be met, face this challenge. Part of the seemless experience would includes one login for all devices and functionality. This is not new, as cloud computing through links to Google, Facebook, Windows Live etc allow for one login. Individuals make their choices of device, management must be aware of these choices and the supprting software. It is no good only catering for iPhone Apps for example, when the other half of the world uses Android. Strategically, management should be in the position of 'first mover' or 'fast follower' to take advantage of new markets from new trends. Being a 'Laggard' is strategically a disadvantage.
Professional Development: Awareness creation for senior management of the implications of multi device, multi platform technologies. Coordination and awareness creation for staff, showcasing best examples already in use. Return of the 'Academic Forum" platform previously run at TTG Campus over the lunch break.
Teaching and Learning: We continue to experiment, try new things, make mistakes and spend a lot of time trying to get better. A lot of this is accidental discovery, but we are not alone in this. there does not appear to be one right way as yet.
Examples of this already in place?
Management: Awareness of the devices.
Professional Development: Mentors and unaffiliated 'others' who formally and informally discuss these issues amongst themselves. Yammer does not appear to suit the need to communicate. LinkedIn discussions provide a global interface but no 'lessons' learned seem to come from this. EDayz has gone.
Teaching and Learning: Personally I have rediscoverd WordPress (accidentally), after much trial and effort have applied a theme that seems to work for me (and hopefully my students. It links to Moodle for assignments and direction. Best of all it can be simply 'framed' to suit tablets (iPad), smart phones, and more. I avoid 'Flash', keep it simple, and don't have to know about HTML5 or any other coding. if you wish, check it out (it is still being developed so it's a work in progress), try it on your smart phone!

Which ICTs are involved?
All the devices above.
Social media, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Google + (?), Windows Live.
"Smart" blogs like WordPress
Many more I don't know about.

      • Other Thoughts:**

  • I think it is necessary to keep everyone in a geographically dispersed environment "together". It is liberating for a mgr to be able to get PD info set up for others to access when and where they can;

  • Many now experimenting with the BYOD for workshops and classrooms. Lots of interest in the Learn Local sector on the use of tablets for their learning. (Carole McCulloch)
