5. Openness - concepts like open content, open data and open resources, along with notions of transparency and easy access to data and information - is moving from a trend to a value for much of the world.

As authoratative sources lose their importance, there is need for more curation and other forms of validation to generate meaning in information and media.

for examples of how successful experiments inside traditional institutions have been funded by private investors (Coursera, Udacity) see this NY Times article. In one case new partnerships were formed across institutions (Coursera), and in the other (Udacity) a lecturer left his tenured post at Stanford and went private.

aggregating information from open sources allows the student to pick and choose that information/data that is most relevant and to convert that into something meaningful for their work practice. Nevertheless, the lecturer needs to filter and make available such open sources to fit the scope of the topic, and to also add description which again contextualises the content to the particular unit to be assessed.
