8. The Internet is constantly challenging us to rethink learning and education, while refining our notion of literacy.

Institutions must consider the unique value that each adds to a world in which information is everywhere. In such a world, sense-making and the ability to assess the credibility of information and media are paramount.

Implications for your institution? This is yet another field where the
difference between physical sciences and the Arts come to the fore.
(there is so much recognised existing knowledge in Physics that
the students are too busy "learning" all that to be involved in much else)

In the language lessons. (a scientist must communicate)

science university.

I am amazed at the naïvety of my 3rd to 5th year students, who invaribly
take the first suggestion on Google, find info uniquely on wikipedia and
generally do not even think of checking where the info comes from i.e. they
do not even LOOK at the URL !

We keep a class wiki and each student has their own wiki (pbworks)- but we have so few teaching hours that the question of the credibility of info
and media gets only a passing nod in my classes - it's already a big thing
that they are seeing that there's more than just FB online :-(
